In 1988 our tribe held its first pow wow on ancestral land. It was called the "Nansemond Indian Homecoming" in celebration of our return to the Nansemond River after centuries of colonial displacement. This year, on the 30th anniversary of our pow wow, we will once again hold a "Nansemond Indian Homecoming" to welcome Nansemond descendants, near and far, home. Though our ancestral land sits within the state of Virginia, these borders came long after us. Our history and our relationships have no borders. As we celebrate receiving federal recognition, we choose to honor Nansemond descendants who migrated throughout Virginia, North Carolina, and beyond.
